Cardston County carefully reviews the need for municipal road construction and upgrades every year as part of our budget planning process. When evaluating whether a municipal road should be constructed or upgraded, we consider factors such as:
✅ Safety concerns
✅ Current road conditions
✅ Traffic volumes and impact
✅ Future maintenance costs
Planned road construction and upgrade projects are included in Cardston County’s Capital Budget, which is available for public review.
Private Roads
Cardston County does not construct or provide funding for the construction of private roads for individual landowners.
However, landowners without existing municipal road access may apply for financial or in-kind support if the road will be used to access an isolated parcel. In these cases, Cardston County may contribute up to:
💲 $2,000 per mile for the construction or upgrade of a municipal road — provided that:
- The road will be built within a municipal road allowance
- The road will be designated as a public road
- The road will serve an isolated parcel that is occupied year-round
Approaches (Driveway Access)
Cardston County will provide each individual landowner with one approach per quarter section.
Any additional approaches beyond the first are the responsibility of the landowner.
