FOR CANDIDATES: 2025 MUNICIPAL ELECTION

Becoming a member of Cardston County Council is a rewarding and impactful opportunity. As a councillor, you will represent the voices of your community and help shape the future of Cardston County through important governance decisions.

If you are considering becoming a candidate, itโ€™s important to understand the commitment, responsibilities, and legal requirements that come with serving on Council.

Time Commitment

Serving on Council involves regular preparation and attendance at:

โœ… Regular Council Meetings (usually held monthly)
โœ… Special Council Meetings (as needed)
โœ… Committee Meetings (internal and external boards/committees)
โœ… Public Meetings & Events (attending community functions, consultations, and other public events)

Expect to attend 3 to 8 meetings per month, held at various times โ€” daytime, evenings, and occasionally during lunch hours. To get a realistic understanding of the time commitment, we encourage you to speak with a current Council member.



Term of Office

If elected, you will serve a four-year term. This term begins at the first Council meeting following the election and continues until the first Council meeting after the next general election unless your position is vacated sooner.

Nomination Period & Process

The Nomination Period opens on January 1, 2025, and closes at 12:00 noon on Monday, September 22, 2025.

How to Submit Your Nomination

Nominations may be submitted to the Cardston County Administration Office during regular business hours:

Important: In accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA), all nomination papers must be submitted in person to authorized staff before noon on September 22, 2025. Submissions sent electronically, given to unauthorized individuals, or left unattended will not be accepted. To ensure compliance with legislation, please contact our office in advance so we can arrange for authorized staff to receive your forms.

Requirements for Nomination Papers

โœ… Completed nomination form (in the prescribed format)
โœ… At least 5 signatures from eligible electors who reside within your ward/division at the time of signing.
